Gang of thieves walk away empty-handed after trying to BLOW-UP a cash machine with petrol and smash it with a crowbar

  • After the ATM fails to explode, the gang unsuccessfully attempt to wince it open
  • Shop manager Sarah Hunt joked they ‘watched the wrong YouTube tutorial’

A bungling gang of thieves today resorted to smashing an ATM with a crowbar for 15 minutes after unsuccessfully trying to blow it up – and still walked away empty handed.

CCTV footage shows the group wearing white overalls pouring petrol on a cash machine and setting a trail before lighting it.

But it appears the gang members put out their own fire after it failed to explode the ATM outside a shop – and then tried to break into it using a crowbar.

Shop manager Sarah Hunt joked the would-be burglars ‘watched the wrong YouTube tutorial’ after their failed bid in the early hours of this morning.

Ms Hunt said: ‘There were five of them outside the shop, and they tried to blow up the cash machine.

‘It looks like they tried to blow the machine out of the wall using petrol. ‘They were wearing the forensic suits and were kitted out with crow bars.

‘Like any local shop we get shoplifters, but we’ve never had to deal with this before.’

She added: ‘It was an interesting start to my Monday morning.’

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: ‘We are investigating a burglary attempt which took place at Welcome store in Upper Old Street, Stubbington.

‘In the early hours of this morning damage was caused to an ATM machine at the store. ‘Nothing is reported stolen.

‘Enquiries are on-going.’
