A rape victim has bravely spoken out about the moment her childhood friend ‘betrayed’ her by launching a sex attack on her as she slept.

Shannon Wood, 21, fell asleep on the sofa after a party at her best friend’s house in Glasgow, Scotland.

When she woke up she found Andrew Kane – a friend who she had known since she was a child – raping her.

In April this year, Kane, 21, of Glasgow, was jailed for six years after admitting rape.

Now Shannon has bravely waived her right to anonymity in order to tell her story and ‘help other survivors know they can get through it too’.

Shannon, a carer, said she had known her attacker since childhood as her mother, Linda Wood, 50, and Kane’s father were good friends growing up.

She said: ‘Andrew and I were close growing up and I trusted him.

‘They (our parents) had been close for over 30 years and my mother knew Andrew since he was a little baby. So, when Andrew and I were little, we always played together.’

As Shannon and Kane grew older, they went to different schools and drifted apart.

But years later, in September 2012, when they were both 12, they reconnected.

‘Over the years, we always chatted about our families and supported each other.

‘We’d hang out at parks, go cycling or for long walks.’

In 2016, Shannon met someone and they got a house together. Meanwhile, Kane got a girlfriend and they had a child.

Then, in February 2020, Shannon’s best friend, Argylle Pollock, 21, also a carer, had a house party one night.

Shannon’s then-partner had work the next day, so she went alone.

She says: ‘When I arrived I was delighted to see Andrew there. The drinks were flowing and Andrew and I had a catch up outside.

‘He asked how my boyfriend was and how life was going.’

Afterwards, Shannon and Kane joined everyone back inside.

Shannon says: ‘I didn’t drink often but I was in a great mood so I kept topping up my wine.

‘Within a few hours, my head was spinning. By 6am, everything went black.’

Unbeknown to Shannon, she’d passed out on the living room sofa. Minutes later, she woke up to a sharp pain.

Shannon says: ‘I opened my eyes and saw Andrew was on me, raping me.

‘My leggings and pants had been pulled down to my ankles. At first, I froze.

Shannon (also pictured right with friend Argylle Pollock), a carer, said she had known her attacker since childhood as her mother, Linda Wood, 50, and Kane’s father were good friends growing up.

‘But then I leapt off the sofa, pulled my clothes up and burst into tears.

‘Andrew just stared at me blankly, staying silent. I couldn’t believe what had just happened.’

Terrified, Shannon ran upstairs to Argylle’s bedroom, woke her up and told her that Kane had just raped her.

Argylle shot downstairs to confront Kane.  ‘I stood at the top of the stairs, shaking,’ said Shannon.

‘I heard Argylle sceaming at Andrew, asking why he’d do that to me. I then heard Andrew tell her that I wasn’t asleep through all of it.

In April 2021, Kane, 21, of Glasgow, pleaded guilty to one count of rape against Shannon at The High Court in Glasgow. He was jailed for six years

‘I was disgusted. I soon heard commotion and realised our other friends, who were asleep, had woken up.

‘They forced him to leave. After I heard the door slam, I collapsed. I felt so betrayed.’

Shortly after, Argylle walked Shannon to the police station where she reported Kane.

Later that week, he was charged with the attack.

Shannon says: ‘It wasn’t enough for what he did to me. After that, my mental health deteriorated and I shut down emotionally.

‘My boyfriend and I split because of it. Mum was absolutely beside herself when she found out.

‘She never thought Andrew would do something like this and it kills her that she wasn’t there to protect me that night.

‘Now, I’m trying to come to terms with what happened and move forward. But it’s so hard. I’ll never forgive Andrew.’
